There is also that Anthony Barr is playing basically on a one year contract and he will likely need to be replaced in 2022, will the Vikings draft one to compete and possibly start? Linebackers While they are less important than ever before, linebackers are still vital to the success of the defense. With tight ends and running backs being more and more important in the passing game, you need your linebackers to be excellent athletes who can thrive in pass coverage. The traditional MIKE linebacker still has a place in the league, but it’s hard to place a premium on a position where a traditional style only plays on first and second downs. When I watch linebackers, I prioritize vision, instincts, and athleticism. Do they see the field well and react quickly to what they see? How is their sideline to sideline speed? Can they cover well? Can they string all of those things together to make a complete player? In this episode Tyler breaks down the top 5 corner back prospects for the draft and the likelihood that the Vikings would take one is high at #14 could be possible. After the legal issues of Jeff Gladney surfaced, suddenly the signing Patrick Peterson and Mackensie Alexander for a one year rental, Mike Hughes’ injury history and the fact that the only CB on the roster for 2022 may only be Cameron Dantzler, throw in Mike Zimmer’s affinity for corners and this selection may indeed happen. Cornerbacks This cornerback class was a lot of fun. From top to bottom, this class is loaded in the top 100 with a lot of varying play styles. I believe there are upwards of 7 guys who could go in the first round with a lot of talent available into day 3. Corners are at a premium in the league now more than ever and I wouldn’t be shocked to see a massive run go early day 3. Corners are a fun position to break down. Some are excellent in press coverage and others only playing off coverage or zone. The biggest thing I look for when watching them is football IQ. How are their read and reaction skills? Do they have the athleticism to match their instincts and keep up with the receiver? How are their ball skills? When they get beat, how do they recover? A lot of nuances that get differentiate the different types of corners but they all still need to cover the receivers just the same. In this episode Tyler breaks down the top 5 defensive linemen prospects for the draft. The Vikings have a competition available for theinteriror D-line, will the Vikings draft one to compete? Interior Defensive Line One of my favorite positions in the game, this class unfortunately was not very good. Described by a couple of scouts as “the worst interior defensive line classes they had ever seen”, this class overall was not very good, nor was it deep. If you have a dire need for a defensive tackle, this is a bad year to need one. When I grade defensive tackles, I look for a couple of things: winning the rep and pressuring the pocket and not losing the rep or the leverage battle. With help almost always coming from the linebackers at the second level, it’s sometimes more important to keep leverage and hold your position. Understanding that will give you a better snapshot of how a defensive lineman wins. Tight End Probably the most unique position on the field, tight ends are asked to do literally everything. They are expected to block, be explosive, and run crisp routes. In order to block, they need to have muscle mass which in turn hinders their explosiveness and speed. When you find a special one, they can be a true game-changer. Look at what Travis Kelce and George Kittle have done for their respective teams. This class has one generational talent, a few other good ones and it falls off of a cliff. When I scout tight ends, I look at all the traits equally. With move, inline, and blocking tight ends, they all have different attributes in which they are strong. In this episode Tyler breaks down the top 5 running backs prospects for the draft. The Vikings have a competition available for the RB3, will the Vikings draft one to compete? Running Backs This group of running backs is unique to previous years. After the top 5-6, there is a really big drop-off. This isn’t a class where you are going to be able to get a guy in the middle rounds who can come in and play right away. If you want one, you will have to spend a late first/early second-round pick. When I scout running backs, I prioritize three main elements: vision, burst, and contact balance. I can live without a running back having true home run deep speed if he can burst through the hole and get a large gain. To me, that’s more important because it affects the team on every down rather than just one or two plays a game. In this episode Tyler breaks down the top 5 edge prospects for the draft and the likelihood that the Vikings would take one is high. Edge There are numerous ways to classify pass rushers. You can group them as 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB, but I group them under one category: EDGE. This group is really unique in that there isn’t a true alpha like Nick Bosa or Myles Garrett. What this group does have is depth. There are 11 players on my board with a grade above day 3 which is excellent depth. When I grade edge rushers, I mainly focus on how they win. Do they win with speed? Power? Technique? Once they get beaten, how do they evolve their pass rush plan? Are they versatile, meaning can they work inside and out? What positions do they work best from? I have a preference for long athletes who can win with power and speed. In this episode Tyler breaks down the top 5 offensive guards and centers for the draft and suspects that the Vikings would take one or at least the fans want it. Interior Offensive Linemen This year’s class of interior offensive lineman is full of variety. From guys with brute power to hyper-quick athletes, it has something for every offense. When I grade, I always grade a player at the position I think they will excel best at in the NFL, so you will see some guys on my list that others will have graded as tackles. With interior offensive linemen, I grade them very similar to how I grade the tackles: I look for how you win and how you lose. While my scale is technically the same, I value winning against power and establishing your anchor more on the interior than I do with tackles. Even though guards don’t matter, you still need good ones on your team.
