In today’s episode of Two Old Bloggers - we are going to look at your Minnesota Vikings during the bye week. The team has five wins so far in the season and as the great Bill Parcells would say, “you are what your record says you are“, but are they? The obvious answer is yes, they are 5-1, but do the stats reflect that? We will also be looking at what kind of offense the Minnesota Vikings generated. Do they have a new identity? We all expected a high-flying pass-heavy system, but are we getting that? That is a very good question and we’re gonna look back at last season and compare the two. You’ll be a little surprised at what you see and hear in this case. Then we’re going to do our bye-week quick hitters. Patrick Jones had a great game last week and is showing the depth that we have at the outside linebacker/edge rusher position. He and DJ Wonnum have put up some good stats in relief so far the season for Danielle Hunter and Za’Darius Smith and it is a bright light to see not a huge drop-off, or actually almost any drop-off whatsoever in play. Then there is how this team is staying healthy for the most part. There have only been two missed games by starters, one by Harrison Smith, and the other with DJ Wonnum. Compared to the rest of the league, that is outstanding! It turns out that the hiring of, Tyler Williams may have a thing or two to deal with that. We will find out on today's show. On this 🎙The Real Forno Show 🏈 - The Minnesota Vikings flew into Miami and did something that they hadn't been able to do since Bud Grant was the head coach in 1976: win a football game! They had a very odd performance against the Dolphins, in which they allowed 458 yards and went three and out 10 times in 15 drives. The offense struggled massively throughout the game but came up with three touchdown drives when they needed it. With the Vikings sitting at 5-1, they certainly don't feel like a standard 5-1 team. In this episode of Two Old Bloggers🎙, after another come-from-behind victory last week against the Chicago Bears, your Minnesota Vikings have left the Twin Cities, right after its first snow to head down to Miami to meet the Miami Dolphins for a Sunday matchup. This will be the third road game of the season. The Vikings are 4–1 and the Dolphins are 2–3. The Dolphins are dinged up and look to be starting Skylar Thompson. We’ll get into what is the Skylar effect. The Minnesota Vikings have not done well, or at least not as well as they should against backup quarterbacks, and that looks to be a possibility this weekend. Tua Tagovailoa‘s already been ruled out. Most likely Teddy Bridgewater will be the backup. The reason for that is Mike McDaniel wanted a full week of practice for his starting quarterback. How will it work against the Minnesota Vikings? We’re just gonna have to find out, There have been some pleasant surprises so far, despite the fact that there has been a lot of stress over some of the wins. Darren wants to share a bit of love for three of those players the first of which is D.J. Wonnum. This is his most productive season for the Vikings, and he has become an integral backup to Danielle Hunter. Then there is the elder statesman of the defense, Patrick Peterson, who has with his smarts and mentorship skill done a better job this season than some expected. But the biggest surprise of all has to be Garrett Bradbury at center. Bradbury has had probably the best season of his career so far under the Kevin O’Connell offensive system [something Darren talked of as possible before the season]. It is a combination of him putting on strength and working on his craft in the off-season along with complementary play by the interior line. Ezra Cleveland and Ed Ingram are being schemed to help him and all three perform as a solid unit in pass protection. The improvement on the offensive line is one of the most pleasant surprises of the season. How will the Vikings do against the Dolphins? That’s a great question. On this 🎙The Real Forno Show 🏈 - The Minnesota Vikings now sit at 4-1 after beating division rival Chicago Bears 29-22 in one of the more odd games in recent memory. Kirk Cousins started the game on fire completing a team-record 17 consecutive passes to start the game and Justin Jefferson caught a career-high 12 passes for 154 yards along with a clutch 2-point conversion to put the Vikings up seven. The two's relationship on the football field is definitely turning into one that is best described as "Besties". The Bears scored 19 straight points to take a one-point lead where they were able to move seemingly at will. Cousins also disappeared after the first three drives until the final drive. On that final drive, Cousins led a 17-play, 75-yard drive to get the win. As we move forward to Miami, how do we evaluate this game? The good was great but the bad has been there most of the season. In this episode of Two Old Bloggers, we ask the question of what’s wrong with Kirk Cousins. Kirk has been a different player since the arrival of Kevin O’Connell. All his normal stat metrics like yards thrown, touchdowns, QBR, Football Outsiders DVOA, and Pro Football Focus grades are down after the first 4 weeks of the season. Is something wrong with him? He may be declining like other quarterbacks such as Russell Wilson. Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers have spoiled fans with how long a QB can play but normally most start to decline as they get into their 30s. Or is all of this the transitional growing pains of migrating from a Kevin Stefanski/Gary Kubiak/Klint Kubiak offense to a Kevin O’Connell-called offense? The reading of progressions has changed, and Kirk has publicly talked about that. Even Kirk’s biggest detractors have pointed out however that he has improved in the only stat that matters this season, QB wins. He even has two fourth-quarter comebacks. Is he declining or is it just hiccups in the transition to a new scheme and the production will get to what we all thought it would be? What’s your answer? Darren will lead the discussion on some quick hitters from Lewis Cine’s major injury versus the New Orleans Saints. Dalvin Tomlinson is having an impact on the defensive line like we haven’t seen before. When the rest of the defense is learning the Ed Donatell defense, it has been helpful. What about penalties this season in the first 4 games? It has been much lower than Mike Zimmer’s teams even though the team is changing schemes in all 3 phases of the game. Why is that? Darren and Dave will then get into breaking down the Vikings vs the Chicago Bears. The Bears are firmly committed to blowing it all up and rebuilding mode. Justin Fields is still on his rookie contract and hasn’t played well. Not having weapons and a quality team around him isn’t helping, but it isn’t all on him.
