Riley Reiff was cut and now dominoes are starting fall on the offensive line. How will it change the look of the line, the free agency and draft strategies, and the results? Does Ezra Cleveland get his start at left tackle? He drafted as one, but has yet to take the snap there that any fans have seen. Does Brian O’Neill get moved over to left tackle. He’s coming up on an extension and we know left tackles get paid more than right tackles do. Do the Vikings try and get Orlando Brown Jr? Darren Wolfson confirmed earlier in the week that the Vikings had talked to the Ravens about what it would take. What about the guard positions? The Vikes needed a left guard, but if Cleveland moves to tackle, they will need two. Dominoes are falling and we don’t know yet where it will end up. What are your guesses? The Vikings have managed through the some key cuts of Kyle Rudolph and Riley Reiff to get under the cap and are sitting around $8M below it. That doesn’t give them room for any splash type free agents though. Do they need one or two? If they do, who is next to be released or traded? Shamar Stephen would clear a few, but the big fish would be if Anthony Barr was traded. That again would affect draft and free agent strategy. There might be some extensions like to Harrison Smith to free up a bit, but we aren’t talking chunks like a Barr trade, or even a Cousins trade could generate. This next week should tell us a lot. …Like the the biggest question of all… Are the Vikings an ascending team, just treading water, or worse, a descending team? With the speculation that the Vikings will trade down to recoup the second-round pick that they gave up with the Ngakoue trade, we did just that. After multiple trades, the Vikings ended up with the Steelers pick at 24 and selected Minnesota WR Rashod Bateman. While not a pressing need like others on the roster, it is a need and there is tremendous value with it being Tyler’s WR2 in this draft. Following the pick of Bateman, the guys had the Vikings wheeling and dealing throughout, taking a total of 8 players utilizing both elements of value and need to make the selections. Round One, Pick 24: CB Greg Newsome II, Northwestern A big-bodied corner with great ball skills, Newsome II played well against the best the Big Ten had to offer. I believe Zimmer will fall in love with his game and wouldn’t be surprised to see the Vikings make a run at him. Round Two, Pick 55: iDL Jay Tufele, USC A hyper athlete, Tufele would come in and fill the role the Vikings have been trying to fill since Sharrif Floyd. He could step in day one and be a big-time addition. Round 3, Pick 70: EDGE Carlos Basham Jr, Wake Forest Needing bodies desperately on the defensive line, the Vikings turn to Carlos Basham Jr. A big body who plays well on the edge, Basham Jr has enough quick twitch to win on the edge and on the inside as well. Round 3, Pick 90: S Hamsah Nasirildeen, Florida State A true hybrid player, Nasirildeen brings a versatility element that the Vikings have lacked on the back end. Mike Zimmer will have a lot of fun using him as a true chess piece. Round 4, Pick 119: OT D’Ante Smith A true “my guy” for Tyler, Smith is a high upside athlete who is also a good offensive lineman. When you take a developmental guy in round 4, it’s almost necessary to be versatile. Smith can play both tackle and guard spots while learning on the fly. Round 4, Pick 134: OT Walker Little, Stanford The former 5 star tackle hasn’t played football since 2018 due to a torn ACL in 2019 and opting out this past season, but there is talent there. This is the proper spot to take a gamble on a guy many were mocking in the first round prior to the 2019 season. Round 4, Pick 143: EDGE Cameron Sample, Tulane The biggest defensive lineman standout at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Sample is a great guy to bring in to the fold with Tufele and Basham. Sample has some real upside and with the depth that the Vikings will have after this draft class, he will have time to develop. Fan with us!!!
